How do you obtain German citizenship?





There are several different ways to obtain German citizenship. The most common method is by descent, which means that one or both of your parents were German citizens when you were born. Requirements for German citizenship in detail



After eight years, you can apply for citizenship in Germany. Basically, you can apply for citizenship in Germany if you have lived legally and permanently in Germany for eight years and are at least 16 years old


Duration of legal residence in Germany

Eight years
The applicant is entitled to German citizenship eight years after legal residence in Germany.

Seven years:
This period may be reduced to seven years if the applicant is successful in the fusion cycle.

Six years:
A period of six years is calculated for a refugee if he or she resides in Germany and is demonstrably integrated into German society, or if he or she is active in special service and humanitarian areas, e.g., assistance with Caritas or Diakonie.

A person applying for citizenship must not receive welfare from the state and must be able to provide for themselves and their family. Exceptional cases include:

  • Unemployment benefits in case of loss of former job.

  • A birth certificate, marriage certificate in Germany, and other official papers you need must be notarized in Syria if you are Syrian, for example.
