How to obtain French nationality

Are you interested in becoming a French citizen? There are a few different ways to obtain French nationality. In this blog post, we will go over the requirements and process for obtaining French nationality through marriage, birth, naturalization, and descent.

The process of obtaining French nationality can be long and complicated, but it is possible for those who are eligible and meet the requirements. In this blog post, we will outline the steps necessary to obtain French nationality.

3 ways to obtain French citizenship

Naturalization

If you want to become a French citizen, you can apply through the government. The process is long and requires a lot of paperwork, but it’s definitely worth it if you want to be a part of this beautiful country.

  1. lived in France continuously for five years (less in certain circumstances, such as if you studied at a French college for two years, contributed to the beautification of France, or completed an "exceptional integration course" in civil work, science, economics, culture, or sports, in which case two years).
  2. You can prove that you are integrated into French society by speaking French and knowing French culture and society and the rights and obligations of French citizens.
  3. If you become a French citizen by naturalization or marriage, you must sign an admission and integration contract. This model is valid for 12 months. After that, it will be checked if you have fulfilled the requirements of CAI, e.g. if you have acquired sufficient knowledge of French or if you have participated in a civic education course.

Marriage

If you would like to know how to become a French citizen after four years of marriage to a French citizen, provided that:

  • I am still married to each other.
  • Your husband/wife retains French nationality.
  • You know a lot about the French language. In some cases, the required time increases to five years. For example, if you cannot prove that you have lived together in France continuously for at least three years since the wedding.
  • If you marry abroad, your marriage must be registered in the French registry office before you can obtain citizenship.

If you were born in France or with a French father

  • Children of foreigners born on French soil can apply for French citizenship by descent on their 16th birthday. Citizenship is then granted to them at age 18 if they have been born in France since their 11th birthday
  • The change in French law in 2015 also allows children to obtain French citizenship at age 18 if they have been living in France
  • The 2018 amendment to French law also allows children to obtain French citizenship at age 18 if they have lived in France since age six, attend French school, and have a brother who is a French citizen.
  • If you are a foreign parent of a child who is at least 13 years old and has lived in France for eight years, you can apply for French citizenship on their behalf before the judge. You can also naturalize a minor child if one parent has French citizenship and has lived in France for more than five years.
  • If you were not born in France but have a French father, you can apply for the necessary recognition at your town hall. The conditions for children can be found here.
  • Adopted and adopted children can also apply for French nationality if their guardian is a French citizen.

Exceptions to French citizenship

You can apply for French citizenship immediately and without the five-year waiting period if you:

  • served in the French army or volunteered to participate in French or allied armies in wartime
  • Have been recognized as a refugee.
  • Have rendered exceptional service to France;
  • French is the official language and you have attended a French-speaking school for at least five years.

If a foreign-born person is the child of a French father, citizenship can be acquired as a right by applying for a French citizenship certificate. You do not have to live in France to introduce this app.

If you meet the above requirements, you can apply for French citizenship in your area. To apply, you must submit a declaration (declaration of purchase) with the following information:

  • Two copies of the French citizenship application form
  • Copies of the identity card of the applicant and his/her spouse
  • Proof of address;
  • You will need to provide a birth certificate (if you are not of French origin) or a marriage certificate issued within the last three months.

  • Attestation sur l'honneur des 2 épux, declaration of honor, which the spouses must sign in court or at the consulate
  • Proof of relationships, such as the birth certificates of the spouses' children, a mortgage contract, a joint tax assessment, property deeds, or a joint bank account

Proof of a job or financial support.

Applications are reviewed by the police, the mayor's office, and other government agencies. There is a chance that there will be an interview with the police. The process can take up to one year.

Unless you present an official language certificate, have a disability, or are over 60 years old, you will be interviewed to verify your knowledge of French.

If the process is successful, you will become a French citizen at the naturalization ceremony. You will then receive an identity card and a French passport. Individual family members automatically become French if they live with you and are included in the naturalization decree.
